Challenges of Effective Training Evaluation

Remember the last training programme you attended? You reached the end of the two-day workshop and the facilitator handed out the inevitable training evaluation questionnaire!

"Please can you take a few minutes now to complete the questionnaire and hand it to me on the way out!" Sounds familiar? The happy sheet ritual post training programme is very common - however rigorous evaluation is seldom undertaken and tends to be a one way communication affair, whereby the delegate completes the questionnaire at the end of the programme and submits it to HR or their line manager for interpretation. Rarely does feedback radiate back towards the delegates and a real opportunity is lost to build the employee employer relationship around the personal development training agenda.

 

Based on our findings, there are a number of key concerns regarding current training evaluation practice:

  1. Training evaluation should not be carried out immediately after training programmes - delegates can be experiencing motivational high from the training event and a period of reflection is needed, approximately between 5-10 working days, which enables the delegate to carefully assess the impact of the programme and how they plan to implement the new tools and techniques learnt via their personal development plan. By delaying the feedback a more realistic accurate picture can be obtained on programme effectiveness.

  2. Training evaluation should be an integral part of programme design and should also be integrated into the commercial strategy of the organisation and underpin core management competence development. The process must be robust and easy to administer. In the development of the training evaluation process senior management need to be involved and aligned to ensure critical success areas are measured and communicated back to the leadership team. Changes can then be made both quickly and effectively, increasing responsiveness of the leadership team to challenges.

  3. Training evaluation should be a continuous process. At Katalyst it's the cornerstone of our process and helps us move from training to learning support.
